Samsung Will Focus on Mid-Range and Budget Smartphones in 2016:- Report

Samsung has realigned its focus towards mid-range and budget smartphones, according to a report quoting an unnamed company official. The official added the South Korean tech giant will be lowering its smartphone shipments by as much as 12 percent in 2016.

Speaking with Korea Times, another unnamed official is quoted to say the 12 percent cut by Samsung means that it is planning to ship around 420 million to 430 million units next year. "This is more about adjustments to changing market environment," he said,
This also means that users can expect some big announcements in the mid-range Galaxy A and low-end Galaxy J series. It is worth mentioning that Bernstein Research in a note to investors also said that, "The mid-end A-series and low-end J-Series posted a strong shipment growth. We had doubts that Samsung had a competitive advantage in this mid- and low-end segment, but the actual volume was a surprise."

In addition, an official is quoted to say the upcoming Galaxy S7 smartphone will be accompanied by an Edge model as the "curved models are receiving a better response."

"With its display affiliate of Samsung Display improving production yields of curved mobile panels, S7 sales prospects seem solid and this will help Samsung maintain its global share next year," the company official was quoted to say.

On a related note, Samsung on Thursday launched its Galaxy A9 smartphone in China. The South Korean tech giant is yet to reveal the pricing and availability details of the smartphone. The Android 5.1.1 Lollipop-based Samsung Galaxy A9 falls in the company's premium lineup of smartphones and features more powerful innards under-the-hood as compared to the recently launched Samsung Galaxy A3 (2016), Galaxy A5 (2016), and the Galaxy A7 (2016).

Concern Grows in US Over China's Drive to Make

Concern Grows in US Over China's Drive to Make Chips

China is spending billions of dollars on a major push to make its own microchips, an effort that could bolster its military capabilities as well as its homegrown technology industry.

Those ambitions are starting to get noticed in Washington.

Worries over China's chip ambitions were the main reason US officials blocked the proposed purchase for as much as $2.9 billion (roughly Rs. 19,607 crores) of a controlling stake in a unit of the Dutch electronics company Philips by Chinese investors, according to one expert and a second person involved with the deal discussions.

The rare blockage underscores growing concern in Washington about Chinese efforts to acquire the know-how to make the semiconductors that work as the brains of all kinds of sophisticated electronics, including military applications such as missile systems.

In the case of the Philips deal, the company said late last month that it would terminate a March 2015 agreement to sell a majority stake in its auto and light-emitting diode components business known as Lumileds to a group that included the Chinese investors GO Scale Capital and GSR Ventures. It cited concerns raised by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, which reviews whether foreign investments in the country present a national security risk.

Philips said that despite efforts to alleviate concerns, the committee - known as CFIUS - did not approve the transaction.

"There is a belief in the CFIUS community that China has become innately hostile and that these aren't just business deals anymore," said James Lewis, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a research firm.

Philips did not respond to requests for comment. GSR Ventures, which sponsors GO Scale Capital, declined to comment.

CFIUS, an interagency body that includes representatives from the Treasury and Justice departments, declined to comment.

At the center of the committee's concerns on the Philips deal, according to Lewis, was a little known but increasingly important advanced semiconductor material called gallium nitride. Gallium nitride, often referred to by its abbreviation GaN, could be used to construct a new generation of powerful and versatile microchips.

Bangladesh country profile

Bangladesh is one of the world's most densely populated countries, with its people crammed into a delta of rivers that empties into the Bay of Bengal.

Poverty is deep and widespread, but Bangladesh has in recent years reduced population growth and improved health and education.

Formerly East Pakistan, Bangladesh came into being only in 1971, when the two parts of Pakistan split after a bitter war which drew in neighbouring India.

Bangladesh spent 15 years under military rule and, although democracy was restored in 1990, the political scene remains volatile.

Islamist extremism has been rising in the usually tolerant country.

The low-lying country is vulnerable to flooding and cyclones, and stands to be badly affected by any rises in sea levels.

IELTS test for UK Visas and Immigration

IELTS test for UK Visas and Immigration

If you make a visa application to stay or move to the UK, you need to be aware of changes made by United Kingdom Visas and Immigration (UKVI).

Register for UK Visas and Immigration and IELTS Life Skills

Register here for "IELTS for UKVI" and IELTS Life Skills at the test locations selected by the UK government.
You must confirm at the time of registration that you wish to use your test result for a UK visa application.

What are the changes?
If you are going to or staying in the UK, there is an IELTS test for you.

In addition to the IELTS General Training and IELTS Academic tests, which you may already know of, a new test called IELTS Life Skills has been introduced.

IELTS Life Skills test is the test for people who need to prove their speaking and listening skills at levels A1 or B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). This will be a single test covering speaking and listening skills.

IELTS tests for UK Visas and Immigration are managed by the IELTS SELT Consortium, which comprises British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment.

Are you entering a bachelor degree or higher in the UK?
UKVI has confirmed that these changes do not affect you if you are entering directly at degree level or higher at a Higher Education Institution (HEI) in the UK. Higher Education Institutions currently choose their own method of testing students’ English language ability for entry onto their courses and this will not change. See “Tier 4 Student Visa” below.

Tier 4 Student Visa (without a presessional)
If you are applying for a Tier 4 student visa to enter a university that is a Tier 4 Sponsor to study a bachelor or postgraduate degree, you must meet the English language level set by the institution. All British universities and colleges accept IELTS results. Tier 4 Student Visa applicants can apply to the UK universities listed here with an IELTS result from any of the 1,100 IELTS test locations worldwide unless the institution has additional requirements.
